Week 1: New Years Resolutions!
ASL pod members get together to discuss their resolutions for the new year! Using relevant vocabulary, residents express the goals they hope to achieve in 2026.
Week 2: ASL Game Night
Using decks of cards with ASL number and letter hand shapes, the ASL pod tested their number recognition skills playing fast-paced card games!
Week 3: ASL Hot-Take Debate
ASL pod members put their debate skills to work in order to persuade fellow residents to adopt their silly and outrageous hot takes!
Week 4: Short Film Discussion
ASL pod members reflect on the Netflix short film Audible, reflecting on key themes of sign usage in sports and language deprivation.
Week 5: Valentine's Day Paper Crafts!
ASL pod get together to celebrate Valentine's day through painting and paper crafts!
Week 6: Silent Supper Gathering!
ASL pod members travel outside Shea to this month's Silent Supper at Cookout! We had a fun time practicing our expressive and receptive signing skills with local deaf community residents and ASL users at this fun gathering.
Week 7: Baking Corner
The ASL pod put on their aprons and oven mitts to bake a tres leches cake!
Week 9: Bowling and Games!
The ASL pod attended a bowling event put on by the ASL CIO on grounds, DEAFS. We ate delicious food, bowled, played some arcade games, and practiced our signing skills with fellow UVA ASL students.
Week 10: ASL Media Representation
This week, the ASL pod gathered together to watch an episode of HBO Max's The Pitt that features a deaf patient struggling to receive accessible interpretation services during a medical emergency at a hospital. Watching the ASL-interpreted version of the episode, ASL pod members discuss the accuracy and representation of the deaf experience that was portrayed in this famous show.
Week 11: ASL Painting!
ASL pod members used their artistic skills to paint something relating to ASL and Deaf culture, afterwards describing their creations in sign to their fellow residents!
Week 12: Egg Scavenger Hunt!
ASL pod members sneakily hid eggs around and outside the Shea House this week. Each resident took turns describing the eggs' locations to each other using ASL. We had tons of fun and ate tons of candy!
Week 13: ASL Games Pt. 2!
Using a specialized American Sign Language card deck, the ASL pod learns how to play a new card game: Spades!
Week 14: National ASL Day Appreciation Activity!
April 15th is National ASL Day, so the pod decided to show appreciation for all our ASL professors by making them bracelets!
