Hi! My name is Wakako, and I am a fourth year majoring in Biology and minoring in Japanese. I was born in Japan, but moved to America when I was less than a year old. I grew up in Maryland, surrounded by a wonderful Japanese community, and I was able to learn how to speak the language and culture. When I first came to UVA, I wasn’t fluent in reading and writing, but the Japanese teachers and my classmates have been really supportive and encouraging throughout my years here. This year, I will be the LA for the Japanese floor. I’m really excited to get to know everyone! I hope to create a welcoming environment where anyone, no matter their proficiency level, will feel comfortable with the language.

こんにちは! 2023 J-Foor LAのエンドウ・ワカコです。生物学専攻で日本語を副専攻しています。私は日本生まれですが、1歳になる前にアメリカに来てメリーランドで育ちました。日本人の友達がたくさんいたので、日本語を話したり、日本の文化を知ることもできました。でも、UVAに来たばかりの時は、日本語の読み書きはほとんどできませんでした。日本語の先生やクラスメイトが励まして助けてくれたお陰で3年間頑張ってこれました。そして今年J-FoorのLAをすることになりました。皆さんと仲良く楽しいイベントができることを楽しみにしています。皆さんにとって居心地が良い雰囲気で、日本語のレベルに関係なく日本語を話したくなる環境を作り出せたらと思っています。よろしくお願いします。
